Open Budgeting

We’re currently going through the process of creating an Eclipse Foundation budget for next year. A major part of this process is deciding what programs we want to support.

We would all like to get community feedback on the programs we’re currently thinking about. Better yet, I would love to get some ideas for programs that we haven’t thought about.

So here’s what we’re thinking. For simplicity, I’ve lumped them into two categories: (a) those for the committers and projects and (b) those for the membership and ecosystem. The latter category would be traditionally thought of as “marketing”.

To be clear, there is no way we have the resources to do all of these, so feedback on prioritization would be helpful as well.

  1. I’d recommend looking into IBM’s Extreme Blue internship program and proposing a project over there that would involve students possibly creating an Eclipse project, or working on a specific one. I’m an alumni of this program and highly recommend it. (My views are bias as an IBM employee)

  3. Seems like only commiters can add comments to the wiki. I would like to propse that the Eclipse Foundation consider a grant program for non academics. The grants would be for open source projects. The selection process can be either through a formal proposal process and/or competitions for awards. I would like to proose that the grants provided via the formal proposal process be greater, time based and renewable. In addtion, the work MUST be presented at the next EclipseCon and or some other major convention such as OOPSLA or the Agile conferences. In regards to to the contest program. I would like to suggest that they be held at a quartrly basis and that the winner be chosen by the Eclipse Community. The community selection process could also be used for selecting the projects in th formal grant process. The effect will be to provide support for projects that do not have access to traditional funding sources. In addition, the Eclipse Foundation could also serve as a channel for corporate based funding of projects via the above discussed mechanism. In such cased project would have to licensed under EPL.Licencing of the projects would have conform to the accepted OSI licenses that are compatible with EPL.
