Life at Eclipse

Musings on the Eclipse Foundation, the community and the ecosystem

Nice to See

Check out this IDE straw poll on tezaa. Although it is admittedly unscientific, I’m pretty amazed to see Eclipse out ahead of Visual Studio. Neat.

P.S. Anyone wanna take a bet on how long it takes the Sun guys to astroturf this? 😀

  2. Mike, Why the anymocity, even for fun? In this world, there is place for every thing and everybody. Even while naming ECLIPSE, you guys were on the same offensive mood. Why do you want to eclipse anybody ? (Whether it is SUN or Microsoft) Why can’t we live harmoniously together? Why can not we choose the names of our projects like HARMONY, UBUNTU to name a few?I like Eclipse and your stewardship of Eclipse. And i was so impressed when you extended your hand towards SUN. They have their own reasons not to accept your offer. We do not need to hate them for that. Put yourself in their position and think. –Gopal

  3. >Even while naming ECLIPSE,>you guys were on the same>offensive mood. Not sure how many times this needs to be repeated but here is one more: Eclipse was named in the age of e-everything. Somebody in the room blurted out “e-clipse” and it stuck.

  4. Yes, Steve. You have been repeating that ‘somebody’ in the room blurted out this name and it ‘stuck’. But what hapened to the OTHERS in the room? So, everybody accepted that ‘blurted’ out name as a BRAND name for such an important movement in the java world? Please remember, I respect you and i am with you in this. Like me, tens of thousands of java developers, who use eclipse and SWT, owe you a lot to improve our quality of day to day life. For that matter, all the developers, who use Netbeans, also should be thankful to you guys for driving the netbeans towards innovation paths.

  5. >So, everybody accepted >that ‘blurted’ out name as a>BRAND name for such an important>movement in the java world? Do do you really think that at the time, we expected Eclipse to have the kind of impact that it eventually had in the Java world? Nope. It was a cool name, that’s all.BTW, I agree with you about the harmony thing. Having been the target of bullshit a few years back, the best thing to do is ignore it and get back to work.

  6. There are 2 sides to this. The fact that there are more Java developers makes this no surprise. The fact that Ecplise is a platform for atleast PHP,Pyhton and Ruby IDEs makes me wonder why not 50%?And Eclipse 3.2 beats the hell out of Netbeans on Java source editing, but WTP still lags a lot. And unless you are ready to pay for IDE no normal J2EE development possible with Eclipse.I use Eclipse for coding and netbeans for j2ee related stuff.

  7. Mike,I read Darryl Taft’s article in eWeek, where he quotes your blog, with great interest. I would like to think that we (including the Sun guys) are all above Astroturfing this or any other straw poll. However, I do have a perspective to share on the Eclipse process that apparently is void of nasty things like this. In an attempt to avoid being redundant, please see my comment at the bottom of Derryl’s article. http://www.eweek.com/talkback_details/0,1932,s=26706&a=188858,00.asp?m=19530Kamal.
